The Best LUMIX Cameras (According to the LUMIX Reddit Community)

Yesterday I proposed a question to the LUMIX community on Reddit…

Q: You can choose only two LUMIX cameras to shoot with for the rest of your life. What two do you choose??

The answers flooded in and honestly I was kind of surprised by the results… well at least surprised at how varied they were. It shows I guess that LUMIX has made some really great cameras both recently and in years gone by.

I’ve counted the results of that Reddit thread and listed all the LUMIX cameras that were mentioned below. Let’s start with the least votes and work our way up to the camera with the most…

One Vote

LX3 - GF1 - GF10 - S1IIE - GM1 - GX85 - GX850 - GX85 - G80 - G85 - GX800 - S5D - FZ1000 - FZ1000II

These are all of the cameras that received only one mention. It’s cool to see so many of LUMIX’s older cameras getting a mention here. The surprising ones for me are the S5D and the S1IIE (which was released less than a year ago! Interesting…)

Two Votes

GH6 - S1R - S5 - S1H - GX80 - G9

These are all of the cameras that received two mentions. Again it’s great to see a couple of classic LUMIX cameras mentioned here and also a bunch of cameras that have since been upgraded by LUMIX with newer models like the original S5, G9 and even the S1R.

GX8

Four Votes

GM5

Five Votes

GX9

Six Votes

S5II

Seven Votes

S1II

Another camera that was released last year seemed to be a bit more popular than it’s younger brother (S1IIE). The S1II is one I own and I love it. It’s a powerhouse of a camera and I’m not surprised that a good few people chose this one as their ‘forever’ camera.

Nine Votes

Gh7 - S5IIX

Getting up there with the popular cameras on the list, with nine votes is the GH7 and the S5IIX. There was a lot of love for the Micro Four Thirds GH7 released in 2024. I’ve not used it myself but I’ve only heard good things - I have however used (and still own) the awesome S5IIX one of my favourite cameras ever. It’s maybe a bit surprising I guess that the S5IIX received one more vote than its successor, the S1II. Some people do like the colours of the sensor inside the S5IIX and combined with the video heavy features and blacked out look, this camera is close to legendary status.

Ten Votes

G9II

In third place and the next camera with a whole lot of love is the G9II which was released back in 2023. If you are a fan of Micro Four Thirds cameras then the G9II is basically the ultimate choice. There isn’t much this camera can do! I haven’t used one myself but I’d love to take one for a spin sometime. Not surprised at all that many people chose this as a camera they’d shoot with for the rest of their lives.

Seventeen Votes

S9

Coming in silver medal position, with the second most mentions on the Reddit thread is the LUMIX S9. This is my favourite camera of all time and so I was really pleased that other people love it too. I’m pretty sure I heard the S9 is LUMIX’s camera with the most sales of all time (correct me if I’m wrong) so I guess it’s not much of a surprise it got so many votes.

The S9 is such an interesting camera, when announced it received a lot of hate due to who it was marketed towards, the lens it was released alongside, and the features this camera lacks. As time went on however (and as the price dropped) many people started to give this tiny but powerful camera a chance.

The LUMIX S9 is a full frame camera with incredible IS, great battery life, it shoots high quality photographs, 6K video, you can import and shoot with LUTs, all in a tiny body and so in my opinion it deserves all the love it gets. I wrote another blog post called ‘Should I Buy the LUMIX S9’ if you want to give it a read, you can check it out here -

Online there’s a lot of speculation about a possible second version (a S9II) with people guessing what it might look like or what features it might have. I love my S9s (yes I have two) but even I’m excited to see what’s coming in the future. Eyes peeled…

Twenty Two Votes

S1RII

The camera that most people chose to shoot with forever was the S1RII - LUMIX’s biggest, boldest, best (and most expensive) camera to date. The S1RII has a massive 44.3MP sensor inside its body which means it has the capability of shooting 8K video. It’s a true powerhouse of a hybrid camera and I can totally see why it would receive the most votes in 24hrs.

Conclusion

I guess the question I proposed to the LUMIX community yesterday on Reddit was a hypothetical one that could have been interpreted in many ways. Best camera, favourite camera, photography, video, both.

It’s interesting that the camera with the most mentions is also the most feature packed and most expensive. It shows the community on the most part care about longevity when it comes to their camera gear.

Any way, that was a fun little experiment and I’m glad I took the time to do it. Want to join in the conversation over on Reddit. Follow this link to have your say…
