3 Genuine Recommendations for Camera Accessories

There’s no question, the camera ‘accessories’ market is HUGE with heaps of new things and stuff and gadgets coming out all the time. I’m not someone who is big into gadgets, I like to keep my set up as minimal as possible - just give me one camera and one lens at any one time and I’m happy.

I’m also not someone who is into affiliate links! I’ve never had an affiliate link. I’ve never recommended a product I don’t believe in for personal gain as I myself am personally turned off when creators try to plug stuff for their own profit.

So what am I into?

Well it’s a good question and I believe the answer is… I’m into helping others.

Helping photographers (like myself) is important to me and it’s something I spend quite a lot of time doing… Whether that’s through the Fujifilm recipes or LUTs I make for LUMIX cameras, or the advice featured in my YouTube videos, or answering questions I get sent on Instagram. I simply LOVE helping others - it brings me so much joy.

So I wanted to put together an honest list of genuine camera accessory recommendations for anyone out there who might find them useful.

These are products that I have obviously bought with my own money, and products I wish I had bought sooner in my photography journey. They all make shooting easier or free me up so I can get out and shoot more! They’re all products I use on pretty much a daily basis (definitely the battery charger and sling) and are all well built, high quality, cool products from decent companies.

I stand by every one of these products and enjoy using them so much I want to let everyone know about them. So there’s no affiliate links, sponsorships, or endorsements here… just pure honest recommendations from a photographer (me) to other photographers (hopefully you)!

Camera Bag/Sling

I spent a long time searching for the perfect camera bag. For me the perfect camera bag has to be a number of things…

  • Protective

  • A good medium size for say one camera, a spare lens, extra batteries, cards and maybe even a flash, or a notebook.

  • Comfortable to wear all day long

  • Maybe most importantly I don’t want it to look like a camera bag!

When I stumbled across the Australian camera carry company Hung Supply I knew I’d struck gold. If you’ve seen any of my YouTube videos (or said hello at an event or walking down the street), you’ll probably have seen me rocking my Sidewalk Sling from Hung Supply. It’s literally come with me everywhere over the last few years and I couldn’t recommend it more.

If you are looking for the perfect sling to carry your camera plus a few essential extras, definitely check out their website!

Battery Charger

You can’t be out all day shooting without a few spare batteries, and the more power you need, the better the charger you need! I fumbled about with terrible off and on-brand chargers for years until I finally invested in a ProCube Charger from Hähnel and honestly they are worth every penny.

They take two batteries at a time, charge super-fast, have a great display with the percentage and they even have a plate that sits on top for your AA batteries. The best thing about the ProCube chargers is that you only have to buy one cube and for each camera you have, you can just buy the plate for that specific battery.

You can buy one ProCube and simply interchange the plate for Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm & Canon batteries, whatever depending what camera you’re shooting with that day. Me? I went a different way and just bought four of them and they sit in a row on my desk. I couldn’t be bothered popping the plates in and out and sometimes I want to charge multiple batteries from different cameras at the one time. My ProCube charging station does the job brilliantly!

Since investing in these chargers (and warning they are quite expensive) I’ve never been left searching for a fully charged battery. Definitely worth checking out as everyone needs and deserves a decent camera battery charger.

Vintage Lens Adapter

Something that brings me so much joy and inspiration is using vintage lenses with my full frame digital camera. Vintage lenses provide so much character, are really tactile and fun to use… also I personally find it really fun to hunt for a good vintage lens bargain on eBay!

In the past lens adapters were super hit and miss, but now there are lots of really great options out there! My favourite of the bunch is a company called Urth.

Urth make an adapter for just about every lens/camera combination out there. They’re pretty cheap, really well made and best of all they are subtle. The last thing you want is a lens adapter that’s fancier than the camera or lens itself - the Urth lens adapters are matt black and perfectly blend in, letting the vintage lens you’ve invested in be the focus.

Urth is a cool company too. They say they’re ‘dedicated to create a lasting positive impact on the planet’ and for every product you buy, they like plant a tree or something. Pretty neat!

Conclusion

If you’re on the lookout for any three of these products (camera sling, battery charger or vintage lens adapter) I couldn’t recommend these ones more. All three of these products help me be a better photographer by working hard so I don’t have to.

If you’ve ever had a camera bag that’s uncomfortable and digs into you in the wrong places, or an unreliable camera battery charger that takes far too long, or a lens adapter that’s a bit janky and you’re not sure if it’s you, it, or the lens… you’ll know how annoying these things can be.

My three genuine camera accessory recommendations above have taken away these problems for me, freeing up space in my brain to just get out, shoot and enjoy myself! Check them out if you’re in the market…
