Orlock

LUT

I love shooting in black and white probably just as much as I love shooting in colour. Shooting with a black and white film stock, or a digital camera set to black and white, changes the way I shoot. I’m more focused on light and composition when colour is taken out of the picture.

Recently I’ve been craving a particular black & white style in my images that I wasn’t able to recreate with either of my other black & white LUTs ‘Winter’ and ‘Ash’. So I got to work designing it from the ground up. Introducing my new black and white LUT ‘Orlock’…

This new LUT ‘Orlock’ fades the blacks and whites both to a softer grey and then does something special to the contrast of the mid tones. I’ve designed it to replicate the look achieved when using a green lens filter which will allow more separation in the contrast of the green tones and deepen red and oranges.

Like my previous black & white LUT ‘Ash’, I’ve designed ‘Orlock’ with a base Photo Style of L.Monochrome D for shooting with my LUMIX cameras. By combining this softer LUT with a deep Photo Style like L.Monochrome D, the results to me are gorgeous. If shooting JPEGs with ‘Orlock’ loaded in, my suggestion would be to get your i.Dynamic Range set how you like it, add a bit of in-camera Grain, and you’re good to go.

When using this LUT for yourself, you can 100% play around with the base Photo Style to get a different result every time. For a harder tonal structure use this LUT with the Photo Style LEICA Monochrome, for a softer contrast use the standard Monochrome Photo Style, or keep it at my favourite L.Monochrome D for a more film-like result with deep rich shadows. Another tip for boosting the feeling of this LUT in-camera is to set the Filter Effect setting provided in a My Photo Style slot to Green.

‘Orlock’ works brilliantly for photography but also for video. I used this new LUT for both the video and photographs in my latest YouTube video which you can check out below…
