CineStill 400D

A couple of months ago I put out a video testing my new SIGMA 35mm f2 lens around the North Coast of Ireland. In that video, I shot a whole load of JPEGs with my LUMIX S9 and five of my ‘looks’ for LUMIX cameras so I think it’s about time I shared the fifth look!

This one is inspired by one of my favourite film stocks, the unique, dynamic, complicated but beautiful CineStill 400D. I was excited to try creating a ‘look’ inspired by this film but also a little nervous as I wanted to really try and get it looking cool. After a lot of work on it, I am finally ready to share it with you all. See some examples below…

The first things I put in place were the obvious settings like a Grain setting of LOW and i.Dynamic Range setting of STD to match the look of the 400D.  I chose to base the ‘look’ on the Natural Photo Style and then add my own Contrast, Highlight & Shadow tweaks.

My LUT ‘Daisy’ was loosely inspired by the look of CineStill 400D when I created it last year, so when it came to designing this look, I thought I would simply have to set Daisy to 100% and I’d be done… turns out this ‘look’ needed a little more work.

After loads of trial and error the end result was a combination of my ‘Daisy’ LUT set at 100% and my ‘Kitaura’ LUT on top set at LUT Opacity 20%.

At this point the ‘look’ was about 90% there but the hardest part was finding the right White Balance shift. I played around with it for days not having any luck until finally I started messing around with the Hue setting also. By setting the Hue to -4 and then shifting the White Balance to A:7 M:3, the colours and tones of this unique dynamic film stock started to really come to life.

CineStill 400D is a Daylight balanced film stock so I’ve set the White Balance for this look also to Daylight. You can change this to Auto for flexibility if you wish!

If you’ve ever shot with CineStill 400D, you’ll know there can be quite a lot of Halation present in the brightest areas. There’s no ‘Halation’ setting in our LUMIX cameras (yet) but I’ve tried to give the impression with a super specific combination of the two LUTs, the WB & Hue settings. It has an overall Amber/Magenta tint to the images which and I’m super happy with. Check out the details you full look below…
