Kodak Portra 800
Kodak’s Portra 800 is definitely one of the prettiest and most well loved film stocks out there and it has to be one of my favourites from the Kodak Professional line-up. I felt the pressure when designing this one but I have landed on a LUMIX look that’s really lovely to shoot with and one that I hope lots of you will enjoy! Check out some examples below…
After a lot of research, studying scans, testing, trial and error etc. I found that by combining two of my Kodak inspired LUTs ‘Ontario’ & ‘Earth’ at 50% gave the me closest feeling of Portra 800. Under these two LUTs I chose the Photo Style of Vivid but to control the Saturation I have turned it down ever so slightly.
For this look I have chosen a White Balance setting of Daylight with a good old Kodak push to the warm side. If not shooting in the Daylight, you can swap to AWB with the same warm push for flexibility. (This goes for all of my colour LUMIX looks)
Although an 800 speed film, Portra 800 has quite controlled grain. That being said I have decided to set my Grain setting for this look to STD. which is maybe on the stronger side. Change this to LOW if you prefer less grain in your images.
The exposure latitude of Portra 800 is off the charts, so key to this look is setting your iDynamic Range setting all the way up to HIGH. For the best results, make sure and overexpose it! With the iDynamic Range set at HIGH you don’t need to worry about the highlights blowing out, so what I like to do is turn on my little histogram on the back of the camera and try and push the exposure as close as I can to the top without the highlights blowing.
Settings below… Enjoy!
