HP5 Plus (Pushed)
HP5 is loved by analogue photographers across the globe for a number of reasons… Its ability to retain highlights, its medium contrast, grain structure, and also because of how this film stock looks when it's pushed. Pushing film (in its very basic sense) is when you feed the film less light when you're shooting and then you bring the exposure back by overdeveloping.
I think Ilford's HP5 looks awesome when it's pushed… the shadows get deeper, the contrast rises, and the grain gets much much stronger. For my HP5 Plus (Pushed) look I chose to set my Grain to High which might be a little bit too much for some people so feel free to turn it down to suit your taste.
Just like in my non-pushed HP5 Plus look, I have set the iDynamic Range at Standard which I think best replicates the exposure latitude of HP5. With this setting turned on, you can aim to overexpose your images without worrying about losing the highlights. This version of my HP5 Plus LUMIX Look also has the Color Tone set to -0.5 for a tiny bit of warmth, the Contrast & Shadows however are set at 0 to pack more of a punch, just like you’d find if you pushed Ilford HP5 Plus 400 35mm film for real.
The base Photo Style of this look is Leica Monochrome with my Season LUT 'Winter' sitting on top to provide that film-like tone curve. If you’d like to try this look out for yourself, you’ll first need to download my ‘Winter’ LUT. You can either download it from the LUMIX Lab App or just press the button below…
