HP5 Plus

This year (2025) I've been working on a film photography project solely shot on Ilford HP5 Plus 400 which sparked an idea, to create a LUMIX look inspired by this iconic 35mm film… and here it is!

For my HP5 Plus look, I chose to set my Grain to Standard and the iDynamic Range at Standard also which I think best replicates the exposure latitude of HP5. With iDynamic Range on Standard, you can aim to overexpose your images without worrying about losing detail in the highlights.

After reviewing my own HP5 film scans and loads of scans from other people, I noticed that although a black and white film stock, sometimes scans from HP5 film can produce a slight like warm tint. To match this inside my LUMIX camera, I've set my Color Tone to -0.5. It's very subtle and feel free to turn this setting off if you wish, but I think it just helps to sell the look of HP5 film when shooting with your LUMIX camera.

Finally for this look I chose the base Photo Style of Leica Monochrome with my Season LUT 'Winter' on top to provide that film-like tone curve. If you’d like to try this look out for yourself, you’ll first need to download my ‘Winter’ LUT. You can either download it from the LUMIX Lab App or just press the button below…

Check out some examples of my HP5 Plus look and find the list of settings you need to shoot with this look for yourself below…

HP5 is loved by analogue photographers across the globe for a number of reasons… Its ability to retain highlights, its medium contrast, grain structure, and also because of how this film stock looks when it's pushed. Pushing film in its very basic sense is when you feed the film less light when you're shooting and then you bring the exposure back by overdeveloping.

I think Ilford's HP5 looks awesome when it's pushed, like the shadows get deeper, the contrast rises, and the grain gets much much stronger. I have also created a ‘pushed’ version of this LUMIX look which you can check out here…
