CineStill 50D

This new ‘look’ has been inspired by a beautiful and interesting film stock, CineStill 50D. CineStill are a company that takes film (usually Kodak motion picture stock) and repurposes it for shooting photography and 50D is no different.

It isn’t the best film choice for low light as it’s a film rated at ISO 50 but the upside is that with a low ISO the grain is minimal. The “D” in 50D stands for Daylight and honestly that’s when you’ll want to shoot it, preferably on a bright sunny day which means if you live in Ireland like me, you’ll get to shoot it maybe twice a year.

Even on a bright sunny day, the colours that this stock capture however are really muted and really natural and there is a lovely soft contrast to the photographs captured with it. Check out some example of my LUMIX ‘look’ inspired by CineStill 50D below…

When creating a LUMIX look based on this film stock I knew I’d have to set the i.Dynamic Range to HIGH to match the wide exposure latitude of CineStill 50D. To recreate the feeling of this film, for this LUMIX look I have combined two of my LUTs ‘Hibiscus’ & ‘Neagh’ both at LUT Opacity 100%. When designing these two LUTs, never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be using them together for a ‘look’ but I think the results are really beautiful.

‘Hibiscus’ is providing a film-like contrast curve, while also putting a little green in the shadows. ‘Neagh’ is muting the colours (especially yellow) and putting a little green in the highlights. Combining these two LUTs with all of the other settings I think makes for a really gorgeous ‘look’ and nothing like any of my other LUMIX ‘looks’ so far.

You can find both the LUTs you’ll need on the LUMIX Lab App or press the button below to take you to my LUT download page…

This might initially sound like a strange choice but along with ‘Hibiscus’ & ‘Neagh’, I have the Photo Style Vivid. I just love what this Photo Style does to the image, especially combined with a HIGH i.Dynamic Range setting. To control the Contrast and Saturation that comes from the Vivid Photo Style, I’ve turned both of these settings down to -2. I haven’t touched the Highlights or Shadows for this look so don’t worry about those and to match CineStill 50D I’ve set my Grain to LOW and my Sharpness to -3 as this stock has good sharpness with very fine grain.

The White Balance setting I have listed below is Daylight to accurately reflect the film stock but, as always feel free to change that to AWB with the same push to make this ‘look’ more flexible. Check out all of the settings you need for the this CineStill 50D ‘look’ below. Enjoy…
